STOP BILL 18

The word from Victoria today is that the BC Liberals are poised to move ahead with Bill 18. There will be 2nd and 3rd reading of the Bill during which time there is an opportunity to make amendments to the offending sections of the proposed legislation. Despite our meeting with Minister Yamamoto in December, her office has given us no indication that they are prepared to amend the Bill as it was orginally tabled. support our campaign to Stop Bill 18 by sending the message below to the Minister and call on her to pull the offending sections of Bill 18.

Minister Yamamoto: Your government recently tabled Bill 18, the Advanced Education Statutes Amendment Act. Under that legislation, faculty association representatives would be effectively barred from standing for elected faculty positions on the Board of Governors for BC colleges, institutes and universities. Your legislation attacks the basic rights of faculty to choose an elected representative that they support, undermines democratic principles at our public institutions and threatens the freedom
of association that every worker in Canada is guaranteed. I urge you to withdraw the offending provisions in Bill 18.
