With an unemployment rate in northern BC sitting at 11.5 per cent and layoffs looming at northern colleges, the B.C. government's vaunted BC Jobs Plan is failing northern communities, unions representing post secondary workers said today.

Nearly two years after the expiry of their collective agreement, post-secondary instructors have reached a tentative settlement that concludes the 2010 round of provincial common table negotiations, said the leaders of the two major unions in post-secondary education collective bargaining.

Maureen Shaw receives Sarah Shorten Award

Maureen Shaw was presented with the Sarah Shorten Award at the Spring Council meeting of the Canadian Association of University Teachers' (CAUT), held in Ottawa in May. Lisa Sharp, Chair of CAUT's Women's Committee, provided a brief background on Maureen's career, noting that Maureen started as a contract faculty member at UBC in 1975 in the English department, and then taught at Douglas College, Fraser Valley College, and Kwantlen.

Support Staff bargainers head back to local tables

BARGAINING UPDATE

 

BURNABY- Kris Billy, your NVITEA (FPSE Local 19) representative, along with other members of the College and Institute Support Staff Bargaining Association (CISSBA), met with the Post-Secondary Employers' Council (PSEA) on Tuesday April 19, 2011 to negotiate a set of common and important issues that affect all Support Staff employees.

After some discussions, the parties agreed to resume provincial talks at a later time. CISSBA members have returned to their locals and will focus on local bargaining.

Supporters Rally for VIU Picketers

“Faculty at Vancouver Island University are not alone in their fight for a better contract,” said Cindy Oliver, President of the Federation of Post-Secondary Educators.  “Over 10,000 faculty and staff who work and teach in BC’s public post-secondary education system are standing strong to support VIU faculty in their job action,” Oliver added.  “When the picket lines went up this morning, our locals from across the province were taking steps to show their solidarity for the VIU faculty,” Oliver noted.

Bargaining Stalemate Mobilizes Post-Secondary Educators

"At 17 locals across the province over 10,000 post-secondary educators are voicing their frustration with the current stalemate at local and provincial bargaining tables," said Cindy Oliver, President of the Federation of Post-Secondary Educators. "For more than a year we have been trying to negotiate a new deal for the college and university faculty and staff that we represent and we are being stymied at every turn by local administrators who are unwilling to work with us to resolve local issues," Oliver added.

"The Minister's so-called status quo budget leaves chronic funding of BC's public post-secondary education institutions effectively unchanged, despite the fact that BC urgently needs to increase access and opportunities for citizens wanting to start or complete a post-secondary education," Oliver added.
